    My name is Priscilla Hopper

I am a senior at Beverly Hills High School. Because I had to move often due to my parents' work, I have attended eight schools in five different states. This experience taught me how to adapt quickly in a fast-paced lifestyle and to become a social butterfly. Mostly, however, it instilled the value of communication skills upon me and helped me discover my passion for journalism.

‘Queer Eye’ is for anyone’s eyes

This article was posted on beverlyhighlights.com on 30 March 2018..

    Priscilla Hopper media manager

“Queer Eye” is a Netflix reboot of the 2003 reality show, “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.” A show in which five gay men “makeover” a man in categories including culture, food and wine, fashion, grooming and home decor. “Queer Eye” is a stand-alone star, with concrete comedy and talent among the series’ hosts.

The 2018 series features the FabFive, including Antoni Porowski, Tan France, Karamo Brown, Bobby Berk and Jonathan Van Ness. Throughout the eight episodes, the five men travel across Georgia to host interventions to stereotypically “normal” men. Whether it includes preparing unique appetizers created for each man’s personality or understanding that all men “must” own a pair of dress shoes, the FabFive provides confidence, poise, and courage to each of these dispirited men.

On top of the straight-up fabulosity of the show, “Queer Eye” provides an accurate and necessary representation of the gay community. Each member of the FabFive brings his own flare; Jonathan’s sass and necessity to moisturize is absolutely irreplaceable, and Bobby’s attention to detail and ability to relate to each side of the political spectrum is incomparable. However, even from the mouth of a partially closeted gay man who happened to be an episode’s subject, the question of femininity comes into play. There will always be stereotypes of how gay men dress, sound or act. But, this production not only begins to reverse those worn-out generalities but also teaches other men how to appreciate and accept the LGBTQ+ lifestyle. #Props.

When it first debuted, “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” capitalized on the stereotype of upward fashion and culture advice gay men just “naturally” assumed. Now, however, the series touches on themes of masculinity, stereotypes of both gay and straight men, and the liberal to conservative ideals they are forced to intertwine. By the end of each episode, if the subject is not already crying, at least one from the FabFive is (and you are no exception). The connection and intimacy between the five and each man are viral and honest.

This is an extremely binge-worthy show, so entertaining that it can be finished within one to two days (depending on your stamina). It’s easy to stay glued to the screen with its constant immersion of comedy, heartfelt compassion, and transformations unlike any other “flip” show on TV. As of March 26, “Queer Eye” is officially set to film and return for a second season. The producer, David Collins, is interested in filming in his home state of Ohio and hopes to branch into Indiana and Kentucky.

    SLAG MOTIVATES YOUNG READERS

This article was posted on beverlyhighlights.com on 27 April 2017.

About: This article is important to me because I think that more people need to read. I see less and less students coming into high school wanting to read a good ol' book. I wanted to highlight this club because they promote the benefits of the library and reading itself.

One by one, a group of passionate bookworms files into a small room every month to discuss how to make the library a better place for the student body. These bibliophiles are known as SLAG–or the Student’s Library Advisory Group.

SLAG was created by former librarian Karen Boyarsky. This year’s new head librarian, Daniel Bradford, continued SLAG’s legacy with a late start in January.

Although Bradford acts as an advisor to the club, he does not have a prominent role in the decision making of the group like Boyarsky did.
“Our club is identical in its purpose. Its purpose is to make it a teen-centered
library. A library that really serves the students. The only difference is that Mrs. Boyarsky took more of a direct role in managing the group, whereas, I know I’ve got students in SLAG that are more than capable of doing that, and I feel that it will be a stronger group if I let the students run it,” Bradford said. “I am just there to lend a hand and to provide any kind of assistance I can, and just to facilitate the club.”

    Three Is not a CROWD

It is a Wednesday afternoon. Seniors Bennett Gershwin and Owen Lloyd arrive at the back gate. They hike up the steep concrete pavement at Lloyd’s house after punching in the code that very few have memorized. Lloyd opens the studio door and immediately shines the heavily draped room with an off-white light. After Max Yera’s late arrival, he and Gershwin perch on the bright turquoise hand-me-down couch in front of the TV while Lloyd cranks “When Doves Cry” by Prince. Lloyd grooves in front of the mirrors pressed against the wall length wardrobe after illuminating the studio with a red overhead light. A cardboard cut out of C3po wears a royal blue toga next to a chalkboard with a pink face that had been previously scribbled on. As Prince fades into the Beastie Boys, Gershwin begins to recount his day.

Although they met in kindergarten, Lloyd was not interested in a potential friendship with Gershwin due to the amount of “red cards” he received. The pair reconnected in fourth grade when Lloyd began attending El Rodeo Elementary and bonded over their comedic personalities and interests.

“When we were ten, Bennett was really into the show Ben10. Like really into the show Ben10. Bennett had
a toy watch that he did not take off. The Omnitrix. As much as the watch is clasped to Ben10 it is clasped to Bennett,” Lloyd said. “I just chose to not let that bother me. He kind of just owned the title ‘best friend’.”

    NAVY TRAINING PROGRAM PROVIDES INITIATIVE

This article about Andy Park was posted on beverlyhighlights.com 17 May 2016.

I wrote this for my feature article project in my Beginning Journalism class. I like this article because I think the style and organization of the piece is nicely laid out.

Outside of school some students put on helmets for football and other students dress in costumes for theater. But for senior Andrew Park, donning a uniform is not only for an extra-curricular, it is his duty.

Park is a petty officer of the Los Angeles division of theU.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps (USNSCC). The USNSCC is a federally chartered non-profit youth organization for kids ages 11 through 17. This program primarily focuses on familiarizing cadets with Navy life and Navy-style discipline.
We learn about anything military related. [We go] to military bases and we get taught by real generals and [cadet officers] and it’s like the first step of
Reserve Officers’ Training Corps or a career in the military,” Park said.

Park started the USNSCC at 14-years-old. He was inspired by an alumnus,Jin Soo Park, who participated in the program and is currently in the Naval Academy.

    Award Gala 2016

This article about the Will Rogers Award Gala was posted on beverlyhighlights.com on 18 November 2016.

About: I reported on the red carpet for this event. I was able to interview the red carpet hosts. I think writing this article was a good experience for me because I was able to report in a more professional setting compared to just a high school environment.

The Will Rogers Awards Gala was hosted at the Montage Hotel in Beverly Hills on Nov. 9, 2016. Nominees and spectators walked the red carpet to make an appearance before entering the dinner and awards show.

Will Rogers was a respected writer, actor and social commentator. The award recognizes the achievements of Beverly Hills real estate institutions and businesses.

The gala promoted the restoration of parks around the city like the Beverly Hills Garden Park and was hosted by Vicki Smith, regional education director of La Mer Skin Care.
